Things I use:

Random list of things I use... See uses.tech for more info.

Software

  • Visual Studio Code
This is my current editor. I'm a recent convert from Sublime Text, which I had been using for nearly five years.
  • GIMP
I don't do much image manipulation, but GIMP is what I use when I do.
  • Tower
Sometimes, it's nice to visualize what is happening in a complex git project. I started using Tower at one of my previous jobs, and now I swear by it.
  • Google Chrome
I use Google Chrome and Apple Safari, but I find that Chrome has more / better extensions for development and more developer support.
  • FileZilla
Similar to Tower, FileZilla isn't required... but it is nice sometimes to visualize file structures when transferring/deploying code.
  • Postman
Pretty sure everyone who does anything involving APIs uses Postman. Postman makes testing / developing backend services and developing/validating front-end responses much more manageable.
  • Charles aka 'Charles Proxy'
I use Charles to intercept/modify requests and responses for API testing/development.

Hardware

  • Apple MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016)
This is my main personal computer. It's a bit old, but it's not currently limiting development in any way... so we continue on!
  • Apple Mac mini (M1, 2020)
I have a couple of these around the house. I use them as HTPCs, hosts for local services, etc.
  • Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max
iPhone best fits my needs. Use the best tools for you.
  • 2 x LG 27-inch UltraFine Display 5K (27MD5KLB)
I am currently using two of these as my development monitors. They are big and clean so that I can keep everything needed open and visible.
  • Focusrite Scarlett 2i4
My audio interface that is no longer made... turns my KRK monitors into Desktop speakers and allows me to connect and control headphones/microphones easily.
  • Logitech MX Master
I have a love-hate relationship with Logitech mice... when they work, they are the best. Still, they sometimes go rogue - randomly disconnect, jitter when they aren't being touched, scrolling stops working until I re-pair it... but this is my favourite mouse, and I'll replace it with the same one if it breaks/disappears.
  • Apple Magic Trackpad 2
This is task-dependent… sometimes this trackpad feels more 'right' when doing development than the MX Master. I have no idea why.
  • Samsung Portable SSD T5
I have a couple of these with random backups of projects, photos, and media. They are fast and small...
  • KRK Rokit 6 G2
Studio monitors that I use as desktop speakers. There have been two generations since mine was made... mine are blue.
  • WASD v2 Keyboard
I custom-made this keyboard. I made it pretty ugly... on purpose. (It has the letters of my name in lime green, and the spacebar has a picture of a spaceship on it.)
  • Satechi USB-C hub
This is a hub that I use to connect wired Internet and USB-A devices to my laptop.

Accessories

  • Apple iPad Pro Max
When I first started working at Apple, I couldn't see the use case for tablets... I use this mainly as a bed/couch/patio Internet/email/media device.
  • Apple AirPods Pro
I have a ton of headphones/earphones. Current ones on / attached to my desk: AirPods Pro, Shure SE846, V-MODA Crossfade M-80 (with BoomPro Microphone), Audio-Technica BPHS1, and Sony WH-1000XM3. I rotate them depending on the task/comfort…

  • Brother DCP-7065DN
Older black and white laser printer
  • Canon PRO-100
Photo printer... it prints up to 11x17.
